What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Making Your Dental Visit A Dream

With sedation dentistry, your dentist or oral surgeon will give you a sedative to help you relax or even sleep during your entire procedure. It is sometimes also known as sleep dentistry or twilight sedation if you are not entirely asleep and can include nitrous oxide, oral medication, or IV sedation. This can drastically reduce your pain and anxiety and allows for a more pleasant dental procedure. It can also encourage you to seek help sooner, allowing us to perform less invasive procedures and giving you better results. Our in-house team has years of experience, allowing you to enjoy anxiety-free sedation.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

At ProSmile Dental Implant Center, we offer several different types of sedation dentistry to ensure that you have the best experience possible. Our options include:

Sedation Dentistry

nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is also known as laughing gas, and it is the mildest form of sedation we offer. It allows you to relax and is ideal for simple procedures as it wears off fairly quickly without any lingering side effects.

Sedation Dentistry

oral sedation

With oral sedation, we will give you medication 30 to 60 minutes before your procedure. This medication won't put you to sleep, but it will help you to fall into a state of deep relaxation and comfort.

Sedation Dentistry

IV Sedation

IV sedation or intravenous sedation allows you to sleep during your dental procedure and is used for patients with severe anxiety or who are undergoing advanced procedures.

Why Have an Anesthesiologist?

AZ State Certified To Use General Anesthesia In The Practice Of Dentistry

There are many great reasons to have an anesthesiologist during your dental procedures, but the most important reason is that it allows you to receive dental care in comfort. This can help you feel less anxiety and gives you control over your comfort. At ProSmile, you can get both general dentistry procedures and advanced treatments done under sedation. If you need both, we can schedule Dr. Mehta and Dr. Velangi to perform your oral surgery and general dentistry at the same time for your convenience and comfort.

How Does Sedation Dentistry Work?

number 1

free consultation

During your initial consultation, we'll perform a free 3D digital smile assessment to determine what type of treatment you need. Then we will discuss sedation types.

number 2

your treatment

Before your procedure, we'll administer the medication and ensure you are comfortable before we begin. Sedation dentistry allows us to perform more treatment in fewer visits.

number 3

final results

Depending on your treatment, we may need to schedule a follow-up visit to ensure your treatment went well or, in the case of dental implant surgery, the placement of permanent crowns.

Sedation Dentistry Frequently Asked Questions

How much does sedation dentistry cost?

Because we have our own in-house team, we can offer sedation dentistry at a much lower cost than other providers, and some of that cost may be covered by insurance. Additionally, it is included in the price of certain dental implant packages we offer.

How long does it take to recover from dental sedation?

The length of recovery depends on the type of sedation you receive. With nitrous oxide, the process is relatively quick. However, with IV sedation, you may have to wait a few hours before leaving the office.

How long does dental sedation last?

Dental sedation can last anywhere from two to eight hours, but it will depend on the type of sedation you receive and the length of the procedure. We will help you determine the best course of action for you.

What can I expect after sedation dentistry?

Side effects depend on the type of sedation. After IV sedation, you may experience drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, headaches, nausea, and other side effects. However, you will have no memory of the procedure, and these effects should fade. With oral sedation and nitrous oxide, you will experience fewer side effects and recover much faster.

How long does it take for oral sedation to kick in?

Oral sedation usually takes about 20 minutes to kick in. However, we will not begin any procedure or treatment until we are sure that you are fully relaxed and comfortable.
